The Edge

Again, he ran to the edge like it was his first time being this far from home. That idiot ran 3 feet from the edge like he wouldn’t just fall right into oblivion. Raine wasn’t sure what fascinated him so much, but as far as she was concerned, looking down into that unnaturally orange core always made her uneasy.

It took all day to get way out here. It wasn’t all that far, but cutting through the forest undergrowth took some serious time. There were paths in the forest from people back in town that had to business here, trading routes, or just needed to get to the gate, but none that ran to the Edge. It always felt like the two of them were cutting a new path each time. Roan seemed to have a handle on where he was going, he would recognize a rock here, and a scarred tree there, and they always ended up at the same overlook. Such joy overtook the boy, he always seemed like he would run right off the edge.

Raine shuddered at the thought. For her own part, she was glad to have something to do until dusk today.

Sopheim at sunset

Roan couldn’t help looking back down the path that led to the forest and beyond. The day always seemed to end too soon. Raine laughed and tried to get him to race back home, but he needed that last look first.

Raine loved sunset, and the dusk that came right after. Something about the stretching shadows always made her want to race through them. There was chaos in the vertical shadows cast by long buildings and the sun that peaked through. It was like two different worlds playing together like little children right in front of her eyes. Eventually dusk took over and there weren’t exactly shadows, and there wasn’t exactly light. It truly only lasted moments, but Raine enjoyed every breath of it. Some people recharged by sleeping, or taking a break. Raine came alive as the world of light met the dark.

Blue was just their color of choice as kids. It was one of the things they had in common. I think Raine probably actually liked blue, but Roan didn't seem to worry about what kind of clothes he wore. He was more interested in getting to The Edge as often as he could. He was fascinated by it. He probably would be a good Island Warden eventually. Raine just wanted to be along for the adventure.
